CLE Conducts Inspection at Umma University School of Law and Sharia

Earlier today, the Council of Legal Education (CLE) conducted an inspection at the Umma University School of Law and Shari’a following the expiry of the institution’s training licence and in consideration of the renewal of the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Shari’a programmes.

The inspection was led by Mr. George Nyakundi, Chairperson of the Quality Assurance, Compliance and Licensing (QCL) Committee, accompanied by Ms. Aisha Abdallah and Mr. Oscar Eredi, OGW, Committee Members, together with Prof. Jack Mwimali, Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Legal Education.

Also present were Ms. Annah Konuche, Director, Standards, Licensing, Supervision and Compliance, and officers from the Directorate of Standards, Licensing, Supervision and Compliance.

The inspection follows an audit conducted in January 2026, the report of which was subsequently shared with the School of Law as part of the Council’s quality assurance and compliance process.

The exercise focused on key areas critical to the delivery of quality legal education and training, including strategic planning, financial commitment to the School of Law, curriculum and curriculum development, admission requirements, staffing levels, research, and library services.

As part of the inspection, the CLE team also undertook a comprehensive tour of the institution’s training facilities, library resources, and moot court to assess compliance with the prescribed standards for legal education and training.

During the visit, Umma University Vice Chancellor, Dr. Halima Saado Abdillahi, alongside Dr. Hawa Omar, Registrar, Academic and Student Affairs, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing unique academic programmes aimed at serving society and the legal profession.

The inspection forms part of CLE’s broader mandate to ensure that institutions offering legal education and training in Kenya continue to meet the standards required for the training of competent, ethical, and practice-ready legal professionals.

The Council of Legal Education remains committed to upholding quality, compliance, and excellence in legal education and training across the country.

The Council of Legal Education is mandated under Section 8 of the Legal Education Act (Cap 16B) to license institutions offering legal education and training in Kenya and to ensure adherence to quality standards within the legal education and training sector.
