CLE Conducts Quality Audit at Umma University School of Law

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has conducted a comprehensive compliance audit at Umma University, focusing on the renewal of the license for its unique Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) & Sharia program.

The exercise is a statutory fulfillment of Section 8 of the Legal Education Act (CAP 16B), which mandates the Council to license, supervise, and regulate all institutions providing legal education and training in Kenya to ensure they meet national and global standards.

The CLE team was led by the CEO, Prof. Jack Mwimali, alongside Ms. Annah Konuche, Director of Standards, Licensing, Supervision, and Compliance. The audit sought to verify that the university’s specialized curriculum, faculty qualifications, and learning facilities—including its state-of-the-art moot court—remain aligned with the Council’s rigorous quality framework.

During the exercise, Prof. Mwimali praised the institution for its niche approach to legal training.

"Umma University offers a unique dimension to legal education in Kenya by integrating secular law with Sharia jurisprudence. However, as you innovate, quality training must remain at the core of your mission to ensure graduates are competitive in all legal arenas," Prof. Mwimali noted.

The university’s leadership, led by Vice Chancellor Dr. Halima Saado Abdillahi and the Registrar of Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Hawa Omar, reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining Umma’s status as a center of excellence.

Dr. Abdillahi emphasized that the university is committed to producing holistic graduates who can serve the diverse needs of the Kenyan people through programs that blend moral values with professional proficiency.

Key Focus Areas of the Audit:

  • Curriculum Integrity: Ensuring the LL.B & Sharia integration meets the required contact hours and thematic depth.

  • Institutional Compliance: Reviewing the university’s adherence to the Legal Education Act's licensing requirements.

  • Facilities & Resources: Assessing the adequacy of the library’s legal digital materials and physical infrastructure.

This audit comes as Umma University prepares for its next academic cycle, providing prospective students and stakeholders with the assurance that its legal programs continue to operate under the full accreditation and watchful eye of the regulator.
